Rotator Cuff & Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain is a common complaint in people across a wide spectrum of ages and backgrounds. A large proportion of shoulder pain can be caused by injury to the rotator cuff. The cuff is a group of 4 tendons that surround the ball of the shoulder joint and provide stability within the joint as the shoulder moves. Sometimes, through injury or repetitive movements, the cuff can become inflamed and if not given the time to recover this can develop into a chronic condition known as a tendinopathy of the rotator cuff.
Signs you may have a rotator cuff issue are pain in the shoulder or to the side of the upper arm. This is usually with lifting or overhead activities and can be painful at night to lie on. Sometimes you may be pain free during an activity but the shoulder can become painful after the activity as it cools down.
Positives - we can help !
The positives are that a rotator cuff tear or tendinopathy can be resolved with appropriate rehabilitation. Our approach in the clinic is to first get an accurate diagnosis of what is causing the individual’s shoulder pain and then to screen for any possible factors that have contributed to the person developing the issue. We then progressively load the tendon through a series of stages to promote healing and recovery of the tendon with the aim of resolving the individual’s pain. We also address any potential underlying factors that may have pre-disposed the shoulder to becoming painful which helps to prevent further injury in the future. Finally, we finish with a functional strengthening programme to reflect and prepare the individual for the demands of their specific job, sport or home life.
If you have questions on any of the above or indeed have a query about other types of shoulder injuries feel free to drop us a line & I will be happy to discuss this with you.
